“A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.” - Charles Darwin
Here at Didsbury Speakers we know your time is very important, and we also know that time in a Toastmasters' meeting is limited, so this timing light is of vital importance.
We use this light to let you know where you are in your speech and to help keep you to time.
Let me explain:
Speeches are given a time, commonly 4-6mins or 5-7 minutes, and the lights are used to signify where you are in that duration.
For example, for a 4-6mins speech the Green light would be switched on at 4 minutes to let you know you've completed the minimum time, the Amber at 5mins so you know you are heading towards the end, and the Red light would be switched on at 7mins signifying completion of your time (but we do give you an extra 30 seconds to wrap up).
All of this is to get you used to sticking to time restraints that we all have in the real world, whether it's doing presentations at work, talking on stage or when you only have 3 minutes to pitch your business idea to Richard Branson whilst in a lift.
Let me end with my favourite quote about time -
“Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.” - Mother Theresa
